PASSING THROUGH

“For a millennium, the space for the hotel room existed undefined. Mankind captured it,
gave it shape and passed through. And sometimes in passing through, they found
themselves brushing up against the secret names of truth.” David Lynch

Director Alexandra Siladi (The American Play, 2012 Outstanding Production, Planet
Connections) and actor/filmmaker Shane Jensen (I Can’t Dance) team up to produce
and codirect a night of plays all set in one hotel room on three different dates in three
different years. Passing Through will feature a cheerleader/prostitute who becomes part
of a game played out between two old friends, a group of high society city girls dealing
with bleak relationships, and a married couple looking for comfort during a blackout.
Taken from material developed by Barry Gifford and Jay McInerney for a made for TV
HBO project created by David Lynch that aired on one night only, this play will seek to
discover how the obscure, surreal, desolate, mystifying, and seductive work might have
looked on stage. The goal is to create an environment for characters that are “passing
through”, that live out a particular moment of their lives in the transient hotel room setting
that is once remote and identifiable like the park bench in Waiting for Godot. A mirror
for the theater itself, where we see stories and moments created for us only while
passing through.
